Wake Forest resident Mike Schietzelt to run for N.C. House District 35
WAKE FOREST, N.C. – Wake Forest resident Mike Schietzelt, a Republican, today announced his intent to file as a candidate for N.C. House District 35 when filing opens next week. District 35 covers portions of northern Wake County, including the Towns of Wake Forest and Rolesville.
“After much prayer and consultation with my family, I’ve decided to run because the residents of northern Wake County deserve a strong, effective representative — one with the tenacity, work ethic, skills, and relationships to get things done,” said Schietzelt. “When elected, I’ll ensure that the residents of District 35 have a voice speaking for them in Raleigh. I’ll advocate to meet our district’s infrastructure and transportation needs, work to secure quality educational options for every parent and child, and fight to keep taxes low and ensure that our tax dollars are used wisely.”
The son of a disabled Vietnam Veteran, Schietzelt grew up in a single-parent family in Burlington, N.C., where he learned the importance of service and hard work at an early age. He and his brother watched their father work two jobs and do whatever it took to put food on the table and shelter over his children’s heads. After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), he toured the world as a professional musician, performing in amusement parks and on cruise ships. In 2011, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps as a member of “The Commandant’s Own” United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps. While stationed in Washington, D.C, Schietzelt represented the Marine Corps before many of the highest ranking civilian and military officials in America, and he sounded Taps for military funerals at Arlington National Cemetery.
Schietzelt currently works as a litigation attorney with Michael Best & Friedrich LLP, where he represents small businesses, health care professionals, and faith-based organizations in civil disputes. He has authored briefs in high profile cases on behalf of Members of Congress, retired judges, and student ministries. Additionally, he has successfully advocated in the North Carolina General Assembly for sensible reform of the State’s criminal laws. Schietzelt previously clerked for then-N.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Martin.
A product of North Carolina’s public schools, Mike earned his undergraduate degree from UNCG, and his Juris Doctorate from the Duke University School of Law. He lives in Wake Forest with his wife, Carmon, their four young sons (Arthur, Calvin, Daniel, and EJ), and Mike’s father (Mike Sr.). He and his family attend Summit Church.
